I have fully embraced the World Cup. It is so much more fun to watch soccer or football as they call it when everyone is so excited about it. It is like March Madness here. The best part about the program I am in is there are so many people from different countries so each person has there rooting interests for their home country. They also usually like some other countries while they hate others.
The Piazza between my office and my apartment has become soccer central. They have a huge big screen television probably about 4 meters with speakers and all the games are broadcast live on it. I sat outside with some other students on Friday night to watch the France vs Paraguay.
On Saturday I went out with a bunch of other interns to an Irish Pub to watch the US v England game. It was so great. The atmosphere was electric. It was great. Picture below:
I am pleased the US didn't lose but I hope we win the coming games so I
can get some respect from the other interns. Beyond the respect I get
from being an amazing intern.
So yeah I need the U.S. to start to win games, and not get freebies from goalies.
Today was the truly great experience. Today the Netherlands played its' first game against Denmark. The game was on at 1:30 here which could be a problem for some though pretty much the city shut down for the game. The Piazza where I watched the game on Friday night was packed with tons of people, they were also selling beer today and everyone was wearing orange the countries' color. It was great. I am very happy we won. I know I am claiming the Netherlands already. We took our lunch break on the Piazza to watch the first half of the game, and watched the second half at work.
Here are some pictures from the game today.
I am excited for the next game which is on Saturday against Japan. I will be in Amsterdam watching it, so that should be extra exciting.
As for those of you concerned about my bike. I too am a bit concerned myself, I rode it to the gym on Sunday afternoon and it was extremely difficult. Besides the seat being attached by rubber band the alignment is pretty bad, so it wobbles. I am not sure how I rode it home on Friday night. The bike only cost 10 Euros so I may look for another one soon. I was offered one on Saturday night, but passed on it, because it looked as suspect as my current new bike.
Thanks for the concern though.
